Strathcona High School “Plays it Forward” big time!
On December 18th, Strathcona wrapped up its annual global initiative by raising $54 329 for the organization Right to Play. The Leadership 35 class organized the "Play it Forward" campaign because of Right to Play's focus on helping children in developing countries. Right to Play uses sport and play programs to improve education, health, conflict resolution and community development in 23 developing countries world wide.
The major fundraiser, "Play-On Scona", was a massive Play-a-Thon held on December 12th. Students raised a minimum of $100 to attend the event which included the following activities: a Much Music Video Dance, Hypnotist Show by Wayne Lee, Gladiator Challenge, Paintball, Mixed Martial Arts, Hallway Human Curling (on office chairs) and much more. Money was also raised through raffle tickets for a signed Oilers Jersey, Mush Cup (human dog sledding race) and staff versus student basketball and hockey games.
Last year Strathcona raised $27 000 for a school in Bumala, Kenya. The Leadership Program at Strathcona will now focus on local community initiatives before gearing up for another global project in the fall of 2010.

SWIM CITY CHAMPIONS 2009!
Congratulations to all athletes and coaches for capturing Strathcona’s 24th consecutive title!
Strathcona’s Advanced Placement Program Takes the Lead
It is official: Strathcona High School’s Advanced Placement program is the largest in Canada. In the 2008-2009 academic year, no other school in the nation had as many students writing College Board AP exams.
This year, enrollment in AP courses at Strathcona has risen even further. A record number of our students will write College Board exams in May 2010.
This remarkable participation rate is eclipsed only by the impressive results achieved by our students on these university-level exams. An overwhelming majority of them pass their AP examinations and qualify for college credit and post-secondary advanced placement. more information
Congratulations to our LORDS Cross Country Team City and Provincial Champions 2009

Scona Teacher Wins APEGGA Science Award
Congratulations to Science teacher Greg Henkelman who won the prestigious Excellence in Teaching Award from the Alberta Professional Engineers, Geophysicists, and Geologists Association. Karen Rosborough (Mathematics) was also nominated for this award. Strathcona alumnus, Kirsten Miazga was honored with a Millennium Scholarship from the same organisation.
Language Lab Pilot
Our well used Language Lab is getting a total refit. In addition to the lab being modernized this year we are piloting new language computer programs for Edmonton Public. Our partner is in this endeavour is Faculty St. Jean from the University of Alberta. Once these programs are fully operational students will be connected 24 hours a day with language resources and fellow students. These programs have been very successful at Faculty St. Jean and it is our hope that once the installation is complete our students will attain even higher achievement in second languages. Faculty St. Jean has generously donated their time to this project. Currently, 55% of our students are enrolled in second languages. The Strathcona Education Foundation has donated $35,000 for the purchase of 30 laptops for the lab.
Scona has been designated as the Spanish Bilingual site for EPSB.
Advanced Placement Results
Scona has become the largest AP school in Canada last year. In addition 12 of our students were recognized as National Scholars. National Scholarships are granted to students who have received an average score of at least 4 (out of 5) on all AP exams taken, and scores of 4 or higher on five or more of these exams.
Scona Pilots Digital Classroom
This year Scona volunteered to pilot a digital classroom. This is a cohort of grade 10 students who will go paperless. They will bring laptops to English class and they will access e-books and do all of their assignments and tests online. They will be connected online so that they can use their laptops to work on projects and to share information 24 hours a day. This project is led by teacher librarian Kelly Reierson who developed the virtual library for Scona.
