The Drama Program at Strathcona

Strathcona students will work in a supportive and challenging environment, exploring movement, speech, improvisation, acting, directing, technical theatre, design and theatre studies. Our educators are here to develop your appreciation of drama and theatre as a process, an art form and a function in your daily world.

Students will acquire knowledge.  This course will provide an in depth exploration of the dramatic disciplines of movement, voice, acting, improvisation, technical and theatre studies to committed students of theatre, and will provide students a foundation for further studies in theatre.

The Theater program at Strathcona is designed to provide intensive systematic training for the young actor/actress or theatre technician. Both programs include four levels of curriculum study which are utilized each year through participation in several full-scale theatrical productions.

The Musical Theatre/Acting program is specifically designed to meet the needs of students who wish to combine acting, voice, and dance The program provides students with the opportunity to master performance skills necessary for pursuit of a professional career in theatre or musical theatre. Emphasis is placed on stage presence, voice, principles and theories of sensory, imaginative, emotional and pantomimic responsiveness. Students develop performance skills to present to the public in a variety of venues. Stage presence, diction, projection, interpretation through language and communication skills are essential components of the program. Dramatic literature, theatre history and stage craft fundamentals are also emphasized throughout the four levels of curriculum study.

Students will be able to:

Develop proficiency in acting, dance and vocal music skills necessary for pursuit of a professional career in theater acting or musical theater.
Prepare monologues and scenes for both formal and informal performances.

  • Use physical preparation techniques as yoga, dance and isometrics for productions.
  • Use character and role development techniques, body/voice connections, and dialects to their best advantage in their studies and later in their professional careers.
  • Develop proficiency in dance, vocal and acting techniques for community theatre, Broadway or other performing venues.
  • Exceed the level of training typical of an entering college freshman.
  • Prepare a portfolio and resume of accomplishments for universities, colleges conservatories and potential employers.
  • Understand the professional industry standards for professional theatres, talent agents and actor's unions (EQUITY, SAG, AFTRA, etc.)

 

The Technical Theatre program is specifically designed to meet the needs of students who wish to participate in the backstage, stage management, and theatre management aspects of a theatre career. The program provides practical experience in set construction, rigging, lighting and sound. Students are trained in the safe operation of hand and power tools in a variety of mediums. Sketching, mechanical drafting, auto cad and rendering techniques are the basic skills practiced to develop a versatile theatre designer, while the stage technician practices in stage lighting design, sound design, rigging, house management, and stage management. These essential skills are taught and practiced throughout the execution of our production season.

  • Develop an appreciation and an understanding of stagecraft, costuming, make-up, lighting, sound, rigging, stage management, and house management through the practical experience of main stage productions.
  • Develop artistic communication skills to effectively collaborate with other directors or designers.
  • Portray a knowledge of historical period and style through conventional theatrical techniques of design.
  • Develop proficiency in rendering techniques, set construction, scene painting, lighting and sound design and operation.
  • Become familiar with the industry standards and procedures to research and secure job auditions and interviews.
  • Exceed the level of training typical of an entering college freshman.
  • Prepare and present a portfolio of accomplishments to universities, colleges, conservatories and potential employers either on a one-on-one situation or in a mass audition setting.
